I was a workaholic for 25 years. If you made it in the ad business (back then), everybody was a workaholic. After Yahoo! blew up, I had time for a lot of reflection. I believe there are two types of workaholics. Those that are running away from something and those that are running towards something. If you are going to work your ass off in business, try hard to sort the workaholics around you into those two buckets. Then try to align yourself with the workaholics who are running towards something.

As usual, there's so much to unpack here. The point that resonates with me the most is 'There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.' I have found this to be so true at many stages of my life. It reminds me of the quote from Henry Ford, "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right." To your first point, unfortunate things will happen to you in your life. That's simply one of the prices we pay for the privilege to keep growing older. But turning even the worst time into a positive life lesson requires a mind set that needs to be cultivated.
