I was in a room recently where a very senior person described their role for ten minutes and never once said what problem they actually solved. They described the structure around them. The team size. The budget. When that structure disappeared, so did the answer to the question "what am I for."
The point about budgets and titles being proxies for identity is the one most people don't confront until it's too late. The excavation work you describe, finding evidence of actual expertise separate from the org chart, is something very few companies help people do. And almost none do it before the moment of crisis.
Exactly James! This is why I created career archeology and excavation to remove the filler words with the actual raw material we all have but rarely name!
The excavation work is the part most people skip. They go straight to repositioning without figuring out what's actually worth keeping. That's why so many reinventions stall.
Thank you Sir for your valuable insights on future career opportunities for most of us who want to reinvent ourselves and do something meaningful for self and society
I’m in the middle of professional reinvention right now, and this resonates so much.
Happy to chat more adina if you have any questions about what we spoke about

All are great points about reinvention. I think #5 and 10 are closely tied. Have a good plan and remember, it's up to you.
